Blackheath Village

Map of Blackheath Village

Blackheath is a relatively large area that straddles the boundaries of Lewisham and Greenwich, but getting off at Blackheath Rail Station you wouldn't think you were in London at all. The station is in an area of Blackheath referred to as simply "the village", found at the South side of the lovely wide open heath that gives the area its name. This village also serves as the main shopping destination, and while small, no one can deny its beauty - it really is like finding a small cosy town in the middle of nowhere, except that it's in the middle of London. Most of Blackheath's claims to fame exist in the sporting world, supposedly being the place where golf was first introduced in England, and being home to the Blackheath Rugby Club. This is the oldest documented club and is responsible for arranging and hosting the first national games between England and Scotland, and again between England and Wales 10 years later. Back to the high street, and it may not take you long to walk from one end to the other without stopping, but stopping is something you'll find yourself doing quite frequently to check out all the wonderful and varied clothes and gifts you'll find in the independent shops, not to mention a few familiar trendy names. Blackheath Village does lend itself - with it's beautiful surroundings - to being a great spot for an evening out, and as such you'll find many a good restaurant here, and a few nice pubs too. Perfect for warming up after upholding another of the heath's long-serving traditions... kite-flying.
