Bond Street, The Royal Arcade

Map of Bond Street, The Royal Arcade

Built in 1879, Bond Street's Royal Arcade is at home in the area, with Piccadilly's Arcades very near by, though this one is a good bit smaller. When it first opened, it was called "The Arcade", and had to earn it's right to be renamed "Royal Arcade". It did this by having one William Hodgson Brettell move in to make shirts, and was later patronised by none other than Queen Victoria. It's little surprise that not one shop that was in the "The Arcade" still exists in the "Royal Arcade", but at least the quality has ensued, with a fitting small collection of specialist jewellery and clothes shops, and a couple of art and antique related outlets. As goes the saying, it's all about quality, not quantity, and with quality like this, it's well worth a walk through while experiencing the richness of Mayfair's high streets.
