Bishopsgate

Map of Bishopsgate

Did you know that over 46,000 people work in the ward of Bishopsgate? Okay, that may not be that amazing (or interesting), but when you compare it with the number of people who actually live there, you'll understand why this is one of the few well-known places in London that's busier during the week than at the weekend. With only 48 known residents (as of 2007), it's the neighbouring districts and Liverpool Street Station that draws the crowd. In times of old when the great London Wall protected the city, here is where one of the seven main gates in and out of the city stood, and is where the ward gets its name. Today, many associate Bishopsgate with Liverpool Street - in fact many people confuse the two or forget Bishopsgate entirely, referring to the general area as Liverpool Street. But whereas Liverpool Street has its own designated area and is primarily made up of the back streets (see our map), Bishopsgate concerns itself with the main drag going past the Station and through some rather grand offices. Being part of the City of London (the real, old City of London) the architecture around here is magnificent and well worth the trip alone. But there's plenty more to see and do, with a good collection of quality public houses to celebrate your arrival, or to prepare for your departure. And while you have the time, the high street has a few unique shops to entice you to explore further into neighbouring Commercial Street and Brick Lane. And this is where Bishopsgate comes into its own; as the missing link between the transport hub of Liverpool Street Station and the trendy, almost hippy attractions of Brick Lane.
