Winchester 

Literally seeped in history, Winchester is perhaps one of the most historic places in England. Much of what stands there today has been there for over a hundred years, and some of it for hundreds of years. In its time, it has been the capital of Wessex and even the capital of England. It has survived from pre-Roman times, through Anglo-Saxon occupation and the Norman Conquest, and stands today as a beautiful relic of England's past, yet still functions as a successful shopping centre and popular tourist attraction. With a street plan that keeps most of what the great King Alfred laid down, the criss-crossing streets that make up the heart of the City of Winchester are home to a wide variety of the best big name outlet chains, and the trendiest little independent shops. From a shopping perspective, the main High Street that runs through the middle offers everything a shopper could need, from high-end fashion shops to traditional pubs, with everything in between taken care of. Off in the side streets are where the hidden gems are to be found, with extraordinary fine dining restaurants and little boutiques to find that unique little something. And if you're searching for more than something to wear and a bite to eat, Winchester's abundance of museums and its Discovery Centre won't leave out one little detail of the rich history to be found here. With Alfred the Great keeping his watchful eye on the city centre, don't forget to take in the sights and surroundings of Winchester Cathedral, one of the biggest in England and certainly the longest in all of Europe, with its Gothic architecture and links to past leaders (not to mention one Jane Austen).
